LEGISLATURE APPROPRIATES $4.363 BILLION FOR FISCAL 1998

The 1997 Session of the Iowa Legislature passed 18 different bills containing significant appropriations of state funds.

The bills authorize spending for state government expenses for the 1997-1998 fiscal year (and for subsequent years, in some cases). They also contain modifications to annual appropriations found in the Iowa Code, and related law changes.

In all, this year's Legislature appropriated $4.363 billion from the state's general fund. The chart below shows the total amount appropriated in each of the several budgeting areas and the percentage of the total. Data for the chart was supplied by the Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

TAXES, BUSINESS, CRIME, YOUTH MAJOR ISSUES

Tax policy, business regulation, penalties for crimes, and issues affecting children and youth were among the more frequently addressed subjects in significant legislation passed during the 1997 Session of the 77th General Assembly, which adjourned April 29.

This year's Legislature passed and sent to the Governor a total of 217 bills. In addition, two joint resolutions proposing amendments to the Iowa Constitution were passed. Both amendments will be submitted to the voters in the November 1998 general election. Bills passed by the Legislature must be signed by the Governor in order to become law.
