1 4 RELATING TO ELECTION OF MAYORS IN CERTAIN CITIES AND
1 5 PROVIDING AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE.

1 7 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 9 Section 1. MAYORS – STAGGERED TERMS FOR 1997 AND 1999
1 10 CITY ELECTIONS. Any city which has changed the term of
1 11 council members or mayor under section 376.2 may, by
1 12 resolution adopted by the council and filed in the office of
1 13 city clerk on or before August 20, 1997, choose to change the
1 14 term of mayor as follows:
1 15 1. An office of mayor scheduled to be filled at the
1 16 regular city election in November 1997, shall be for a two-
1 17 year term, beginning in January 1998, and the office shall
1 18 next be filled at the regular city election in November 1999,
1 19 and every four years thereafter.
1 20 2. An office of mayor on the ballot in the regular city
1 21 election in November 1995 and scheduled to be filled at the
1 22 regular city election in November 1999, shall be for a two-
1 23 year term, beginning in January 2000, and the office shall
1 24 next be filled at the regular city election in November 2001,
1 25 and every four years thereafter.
1 26 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act, being deemed of
1 27 immediate importance, takes effect upon enactment.
