The 1996 Session of the 76th Iowa General Assembly adjourned Wednesday, May 1. The Senate adjourned at 11:32 p.m. and the House at 12:00 midnight.
The 1996 Session lasted 115 calendar days, somewhat longer than what has been typical the last few years for an even-numbered year. During the final two weeks of the session, the members spent many hours in conference committee meetings resolving the differences between the two houses on several major appropriations bills. A major bill reducing state taxes was also passed during the final days of the session. In all, this year's session of the Iowa General Assembly passed and sent to the Governor a total of 220 bills, as well as one joint resolution not requiring gubernatorial action.
