  1  1                HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2          BY  MYERS, CONNORS, BRANSTAD, KREMER,
  1  3                  RENKEN, and WARNSTADT
  1  4 A House Resolution urging the Commission of Veterans
  1  5    Affairs to provide for the establishment of a state
  1  6    veterans' cemetery in central Iowa.
  1  7    WHEREAS, Iowa has only one national veterans'
  1  8 cemetery; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, the only national veterans' cemetery is
  1 10 located in Keokuk, Iowa, and is scheduled to be
  1 11 without additional burial space by 2002; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, federal legislation which supports the
  1 13 creation of veterans' cemeteries recommends that
  1 14 veterans' cemeteries should be located conveniently to
  1 15 veterans and their families; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, of the approximate 300,000 veterans
  1 17 residing in Iowa, 192,000 veterans reside in central
  1 18 Iowa; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, fifty percent of the funding required to
  1 20 establish a veterans' cemetery can be obtained from
  1 21 federal grants; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, one of the priorities of the Commission of
  1 23 Veterans Affairs, when created, was the establishment
  1 24 of a state veterans' cemetery; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, all of the veterans' organizations in this
  1 26 state have expressed support for the concept of
  1 27 establishing a state veterans' cemetery; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, a potential location for a state veterans'
  1 29 cemetery has been identified and is available; NOW
  1 30 THEREFORE,
  2  1    BE IT RESOLVED, That the Iowa House of
  2  2 Representatives urges the Commission of Veterans
  2  3 Affairs to take the necessary steps toward planning
  2  4 and establishing a state veterans' cemetery at a
  2  5 centralized location in this state including the
  2  6 submission of an application for a federal grant for
  2  7 that purpose.
  2  8    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa House of
  2  9 Representatives consider financial support for a state
  2 10 veterans' cemetery upon receipt of appropriate plans
  2 11 for establishment and maintenance of the proposed
  2 12 cemetery and a request for an appropriation submitted
  2 13 to the House Committee on Appropriations in an amount
  2 14 not to exceed $500,000.
  2 15    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the
  2 16 Iowa House of Representatives send a copy of this
  2 17 resolution to the Executive Director of the Commission
  2 18 of Veterans Affairs.
