Representative from Des Moines county. Born at Fort Madison, Lee county, Iowa, of German parentage. He received his education at a parochial school and business college at Fort Madison. Came to Burlington, Des Moines county, at the age of twenty years. His first occupation was that of clerk and bookkeeper in a large retail and wholesale grocery. He remained with this firm until 1876, when he started a brickyard on Sunny Side avenue, where he employed a great many men making all kinds of building brick for Iowa and Illinois markets. After some twenty-seven years in this business he sold his brickyard in 1904 and retired from active business. Was married to Miss Minnie Vormerk November 28, 1876. Has held the office of alderman-at-large for four consecutive terms (eight years). Elected Representative in 1903 and re-elected in 1906. Served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies.
