R. G. (HAP) MILLER

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commenorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable R. G. (Hap) Miller, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

R. G. (Hap) Miller was born in Dahlgren, Illinois, on September 17, 1907, the son of Charlie and Nellie Gray Miller.

He attended high school at Zearing, Iowa and graduated with a B.S. degree from Iowa State Techers College in 1936. He did graduate work at the University of Denver and the University of Nevada.

Mr. Miller married Opal Dellinger in 1935. They had six chldren: Mrs. Joe Hall of Des Moines, Mrs. James Rundle of Indianola, Mrs. Robert Bigham of Bryan, Texas; Mrs. Jay Eaton of Shaker Heights, Ohio; John of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Sue Miller at home.

Mr. Miller had been athletic director, coach and government instructor sixteen years in high schools and fifteen years on the college level.

After teaching and coaching at Indianola High School three years, he served on the faculty at Simpson College from 1947 to 1958. His 1949 football team captured the Iowa Conference Championship.

He also coached high school sports at Tama and Keokuk, and college athletics at the University of Dubuque and Sterling, Colorado.

He was a charter member of the Iowa High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, and a member of the Iowa Baseball Coaches Hall of fame.

He was past president of the Iowa Property Taxpayers Association, a past president of the Indianola Lions Club, and also was a member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and United Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Miller, a Democrat, was serving his first two-year term in the Sixty-fifth General Assembly from House District 47.

Mr. Miller passed away April 30, 1974, and is survived by his wife Opal and his six children, eleven grandchildren, five sisters and one brother.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-fifth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable R. G. (Hap) Miler, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of the family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
