Traer Tama County Democrat. Born in Hamburg, Germany, March 14, 1902, son of Christian and Anna Detje. Graduated high school, four years trade school in Germany. Four years night school, English, citizenship, history, and mechanical drawing in Chicago. Married Minna Reese, June 11, 1936; one son, Christian. Was employed in plumbing, sheet metal, heating and ventilation. Service station owner-operator, petroleum, and tire, battery and accessories distributor. Director Traer Chamber of Commerce. Trustee Traer municipal utilities. Ground Observer Corps supervisor. Associate member International Flying Farmers; member of QB, a national fraternal organization of Pilots. United Church of Christ, deacon and trustee. Commissioner, Iowa State Aeronautics Commission 1955-1963. First term in legislature.
