CLAUDE OBERMAN

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Claude Oberman, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Claude Oberman was born in Des Moines County, March 21, 1889, one of twin sons of George and Minnie Smith Oberman. The twin brother passed away in 1940. Claude Oberman passed away January 5, 1955.

He was educated in the schools of Des Moines County, and Central University of Pella, Iowa.

He was married to Ora Westfall of Yarmouth, Iowa, in 1912, and to this union three sons were born: Jack of Yarmouth, James of Newton, and the oldest son, Plon, who is deceased.

Mr. Oberman’s principal occupation was farming, but he engaged in numerous community activities. He was one of the organizers of the Yarmouth Consolidated School District and served as a board member of said district from its origin for eighteen years. He served on the Des Moines County Board of Supervisors for twelve years and during this period was honored by serving as president of the Fifth District of the County Officials for four years and as president of the State Association of Boards of Supervisors.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau, A. F. & A. M., Kaaba Shrine and Elks. He served Des Moines County as State Representative in the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth sessions of the General Assembly. He was elected to the Fifty-sixth General Assembly, but resigned due to ill health.

Mr. Oberman was always a man who was devoted to the public interest, sought to inform himself of the nature of public problems and to assert himself with conviction in the solution of these problems.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-sixth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Claude Oberman, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House by this resolution, would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
