MR. PRESIDENT: Your committee, appointed to prepare suitable resolutions commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Marion C. Hamiel, begs leave to submit the following:
Marion Claire Hamiel, son of Henry W. and Louella (Eves) Hamiel, was born near Springdale in Cedar County, September 7, 1898, and died at his home in Tipton September 25, 1954, at the age of 56 years.
At the age of seven his parents moved to a farm south of Tipton where he attended a rural school and was graduated from Tipton High School in 1916. He entered the University of Iowa in 1917 and served in the Student’s Army Training Corps in 1918. In January, 1919, he resumed his regular studies and was graduated from the college of liberal arts in June, 1921, and in 1923 received his doctor of laws degree.
After being admitted to the bar, he returned to Tipton where he engaged in the practice of law. He was elected Cedar county attorney in the spring of 1924 and served three consecutive terms in that office. While engaged in private practice, he served as city solicitor. In 1932 he was elected a member of the board of the Tipton consolidated school and was chairman for seventeen years.
He served as State Senator in the Forty-ninth General Assembly, resigning in 1942 to become district judge in the 18th judicial district, composed of Cedar, Linn and Jones Counties. He was acting in that capacity at the time of his death, having held court in Cedar Rapids the day before.
Marion Hamiel’s religious life was grounded in the Society of Friends. He was born into a Methodist family, himself being a communicant of the Tipton Methodist Church. He was active in various organizations of the church and was also interested and active in the various local civic groups. He was a member of Cedar Masonic Lodge No. 11 and of the Gary-Whalen Post of the American Legion.
He was married in 1924 to Thelma E. Davis, daughter of Reuben and Estella M. Davis of Buffalo Center. To this marriage four children were born: Eleanor (Mrs. Robert Van Nostrand), Norman, Keith and Carol. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Louella Pilkington, and two grandsons.
Therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Fifty-sixth General Assembly: That in the passing of the Honorable Marion C. Hamiel, the state has lost a valued and honored servant and by this resolution tenders its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of the family.
Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread on the Journal of the Senate, and that the Secretary of the Senate be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the members of the family of the deceased.
