GEORGE O’DONNELL

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable George O’Donnell, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

George O’Donnell was born at Freeport, Illinois, on September 28, 1870. He passed away at Carroll, Iowa, on August 17, 1953.

He came with his parents to Carroll County as a young boy where he lived on a farm. His early education was received in the schools of Maple River Township and St. Joseph Catholic school, Carroll, Iowa. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and charter member of Charles Carroll Council Knights of Columbus, Carroll, Iowa. He was a farmer and later was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad as superintendent of construction. He was a township trustee of Maple River Township for six years and was well known for his community service. He was elected State Representative from the fifty-fifth district of Iowa on the Democratic ticket from Carroll County to serve in the Forty-third and Forty-fourth General Assemblies.

Mr. O’Donnell is survived by two brothers, T. B. O’Donnell of Anthon, Iowa and E. J. O’Donnell of Sioux City, Iowa; also a sister, Nell O’Donnell of Carroll, Iowa.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-sixth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable George E. O’Donnell, the state has lost an honored citizen, a hospitable friend and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution, would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
