HONORABLE WILLIAM J. MCCLAIN

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee appointed to prepare solutions commemorative of the life, character and public service of the late Honorable William J. McClain, of Poweshiek county, Iowa, beg leave to submit the following report:

William J. McClain was born in Rock Island county, Illinois, on January 21, 1866, a son of John and Sarah McClain.

In 1867, with his parents, he moved to Scott township, Poweshiek county, where they resided on a farm.

He attended the local schools and later attended Grinnell Academy. He was married December 24, 1896, to Miss Edith Breniman. They lived for a while in Colorado, but after a short time moved back to Lincoln township where they resumed farming until moving to Brooklyn. To them were born five children: Mildred, Margery (deceased), Miriam, Marvin and Maynard.

Mr. McLain was a great reader, very well informed on farm problems and a keen business man. He was the type of man of whom could be said, “He bore malice to none, and charity to all.”

He was a member of the Methodist church, Masonic lodge and Knights of Phythias. He was elected representative and served in the Forty-fourth General Assembly. In politics, he was a republican.

Mr. McLain died on October 21, 1935, after a short illness. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife and children, eleven grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.

Therefore, Be It Resolved, That in the passing of the Honorable William J. McLain, the state has lost a valuable and honored citizen, and the House would tender by this resolution its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of his family in their sorrow and

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be instructed to send an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
