The pioneer merchant of Whiting, Mr. Whittier was born in Essex county, Massachusetts. He came to Iowa in 1870, and located at Missouri Valley where he engaged in the mercantile business. He removed to Whiting in 1873, and built the first store to start his business. He enlisted in October, 1802, in the 1st battery of Massachusetts heavy artillery, and served until June 1865. Mr. Whittier traveled extensively through Europe during the year 1879. He was appointed postmaster of Whiting in 1873, and has held the office ever since. He was elected to represent Monona County in the Twenty-sixth, 1896, Iowa General Assembly.
