Born January 19, 1790, in North Carolina. He was a resident of Iowa for many years. As a boy he ran away from persecuting aunts with nine pence in his pocket and a tow coat on this back to Orange county, Indiana, where he hired out to work, and where he married Miss Hannah Holliday she being from a highly respectable family. He represented his county in Indiana in the legislature two terms. Moved to Iowa in 1836. In 1838 he ran for the legislature and was beaten by Wallace and A. B. Porter. He ran again in 1840 and was elected to serve in the Territorial Legislature through 1844. In 1850 he was elected to the legislature representing Henry county in the Third General Assembly, serving in that capacity up to 1854. He was a Whig, and was often twitted by his opponents with being a Quaker, he always attended that Church.
