Born in Indiana about the year 1830. In 1851, he moved with his father's family to Iowa and settled in Madison county. Early in the year 1853, he moved to Boone county, opened and office and commenced the practice of law in Boonesboro. About two years after locating in the county he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Buffington. In 1857 Mr. Beal was elected a member of the lower house of the Iowa Legislature. The district was then composed of the counties of Boone, Green, Carroll and Audubon. The fact that he was the choice of these four counties shows that he was quite popular. During this official term the state was redistricted and Boone county for the first time in its history became of itself a representative district in 1859. Mr. Beal was nominated and again elected to the legislature by a large majority of the people of the county. The legislature of which Mr. Beal was a member during his first term convened in Des Moines, January 11, 1858. It was the first session of the legislature held after the state capitol was moved from Iowa City.
