Born in that state which has so great a reputation of being the birthplace of so many of our successful western politicians. He hails from Portage County, Ohio, and was born on February 8, 1835. He received his early education in the public schools in that state, and came to Iowa in the company of his parents in 1849, and located on a farm near Bloomfield, in Davis County. Ever since then he has made that county his home and taken an active and prominent past in its history. His first experience as a legislator was in the sixteenth general assembly. His record that he was returned in 1878 to the seventeenth general assembly and after an interval of six years was again returned as the representative from Davis county, taking his place as a member of the twenty-first general assembly. He was re-elected to the twenty-second general assembly and was the candidate of his party for the speakership and recognized as one of the leaders of democracy during the last session. Last fall he was again re-elected and since the opening of the present legislative has been taking a prominent part in its deliberation. His business in farming and stock raising, He is a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was married in 1860 to Miss Ellen Hotchkiss, a native of Davis County. They have one son, who was postmaster at Pulaski, Iowa under Cleveland's administration.
