His large furniture factory in Chicago was destroyed by the great fire in 1871. He rebuilt the factory but it, too was destroyed by fire. He then came west with his young family, arriving in Hanover Township in 1874, where he took up farming. He built a house in Schleswig and moved there in 1906. He was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Fink in 1867 in Chicago. August Schultz was a man of big ideas, always striving to do things that were for the best interests of his community and his friends. He was honored time and time again by being elected to fill the most responsible positions not only at home but in the state. He was a member of the 24th and 25th general assemblies, being elected representative from this county. He was also a member of the Board of Supervisors for several terms and also served in both positions with honor to himself and to his constituents. In the early days of Schleswig he served several terms as mayor. He was one of the charter members of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. Later he moved to Schleswig and built the Immanuel Lutheran Church completed in1913. He was also one of the organizers of the Crawford and Ida County German Insurance Association, and was its president for twenty-seven years.
