Born in Bellows Fails, Vermont, July 31, 1842. He moved with his father to Bristol, Illinois, in 1856, where in 1861 he enlisted in Company B. 36th Illinois Volunteers. After his discharge he entered the service of the Railroad Bridge Co. whose operations were in the South. In 1869, Mr. Doane moved to Kellogg, and settled on a farm in Richland Township. In 1870, he was married to Miss Mary F. Dean. Mr. Doane served as a member of the Board of Supervisors for one term back in the 70s. He was also elected for two terms as a member of the Iowa Legislature in 1892 and 1894. He was engaged in the insurance business, and was president of the Mutual Fire and Tornado Association for 12 years. He was a member of the Soldiers Commission of this county for 20 years and its secretary for 12 years.
