Steamboat Rock Republican 16th Senatorial District Hardin, Hamilton, Franklin and Wright Counties. Born October 19, 1930, in Steamboat Rock, Iowa, the son of Geo. and Lydia Potgeter. Graduated from Steamboat Rock High School 1948; attended Reed College, Portland, Oregon, 1948-50; received a B.A. degree in economics from the State University of Iowa 1956; and did post graduate study at the London School of Economics and Political Science, London, England, 1956-57. Member of the U. S. Air Force 1950-54 with 30 months' service in Japan. Protestant. Married Joyce L. Hippen in 1958. Grain dealer, farm owner and realtor. Former member of state ASCS and CCC grain advisory committee. Former Republican County Chairman. Member of American Legion (County Commander), Rotary, Farm Bureau, Iowa Grain and Feed Assn., National Society of State Legislators, and local civic organizations. Assistant Majority Leader 1969-70. Elected to the Senate in 1966 and serving second term.
