Born in New Hampshire, March 12, 1838, and has lived in Iowa twenty-four years, all the time on his farm in Floyd county. He attended the common schools in New Hampshire and was preparing to enter Dartmouth College when ill health compelled him to give up that plan. Coming west he taught school for some time in Beloit, Clinton and Hudson, Wisconsin. In his home township he has held the offices of assessor and president of the school board. Politically Mr. Spaulding was a Republican and he was for many years one of the leaders of his party in Floyd county. In 1891, he was elected representative to the Legislature by the largest majority that any candidate ever received for that office in this county, and he made such a commendable record that he was re-elected three times thereafter, serving four terms in a manner that reflected much credit upon himself and to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. He was later elected state senator, in which capacity he served three years, making a total of fourteen years in the Legislature. Mr. Spaulding was married on July 21, 1870, to Caroline Eliza Shepard. He was at one time a member of the Masonic fraternity. He is a member of the Congregational church.
