Born September 27, 1848, in New York city. He was educated in the public schools of New York and Iowa; and at the Western college of Iowa. For over thirty-five years he was a successful farmer of Vinton and was one of the organizers of the state bank of Vinton in 1891 and has since been a director. He was a state representative in the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth and Thirty-first General Assemblies of the Iowa legislature from Benton county and was chairman of various railroads and commerce, banks and banking, and various other committees. He was elder in the Christian church, secretary and president of Benton county Sunday school association, director of the Eden Fire insurance company of Vinton, director of the state bank of Vinton, and director in the Vinton and Benton county telephone company. He was also vice-president of the City National Bank of Long Beach, California.
