Born May 4, 1883, in Winfield Township, which is now part of Sheridan Township, Scott County, the son of Henry and Nancy Ann Calderwood. He attended the rural schools and studied one year at Northern Indiana Normal school, Valparaiso, Indiana, prior to his marriage to Sarah Ritchie Brownlie of Long Grove on Sept. 20, 1887. The couple farmed at Eldridge and in 1889 he aided in the organizing of the Eldridge Savings bank. Mr. Calderwood was Scott county representative to the 29th, 30th and 31st general assemblies of Iowa, from 1902 to 1908. He had served as secretary to the Eldridge Mutual Telephone Company since 1902, and was director and past president of the Mississippi Valley Fair. A former justice of peace, he was also chairman of the Eldridge school board for many years and he served as past president for two terms of the Scott county Tuberculosis association. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, Knights Templar, Kaaba Temple, K. of P., the Rotary club, and the Davenport Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Christian church of Long Grove.
