Senator from the Twenty-third District, Jackson county. Born at Sabula, in Jackson county, Iowa. His father was born in Maine and his mother in Pennsylvania. He received his education in a select school held in Sabula, and in early life learned the trades of stonemason and butcher, working at the former during the summer months and at the latter during the intervening winters. In July, 1880, he bought The Sabula Gazette and is still owner and publisher of said paper, which is independent in politics. Was elected Mayor of Sabula eight consecutive terms; is secretary of the school board, and has held the position since 1882; was justice of the peace about twenty years, township clerk several years, and held various other local offices. In 1899-1900 was Grand Master of Masons in Iowa and since his retirement from that office has been chairman of the board of trustees of the Grand Charity Fund, established by and under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. and A.M. Was elected to the House of Representatives of the Iowa Legislature in 1895 and re-elected in 1897, and was elected to the State Senate in 1899 and 1903, thus serving in the House during the sessions of the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-sixth extra, and Twenty-seventh General Assemblies, and in the Senate during the sessions of the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. He was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1888.

He is a native of the county he represents, having been born in Sabula February 13, 1855, and lived there all his life. His education was gained in the public schools of the town. At present he is the editor and proprietor of the Sabula Gazette, Miles Reporter and Preston Independent, owns the ferry boat running between Sabula and Savanna, Illinois, and owns considerable agricultural land near Sabula. Mr. Lambert started in life by learning the trades of stone mason and butcher, working at the former during the summer and the latter in the winter. He embarked in the newspaper business in 1880 and has made a success of it from the start. All his success has been gained by his own efforts. He was married to Miss Jennie Cotton, and they have one child, Hazel C. Lambert, aged 6. Mr. Lambert served six successive years as mayor, of Sabula and refused to hold the office any longer. He has been a justice of the peace, member of the school board, etc. He is a Democrat. Among the secret societies he is quite well known,, having attained the thirty-second degree in Masonic circles, and has been master of his lodge for ten years. He has been chairman of the committee on chartered lodges in the Iowa grand lodge. He is also enrolled among the Shriners, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. This winter he will work for the enactment of a license law among other things, and will favor the manufacture of liquors in the state.
