Senator from the Second Senatorial District, composed of the counties of Van Buren and Jefferson, was born in Belmont county, Ohio, April 6, 1838. His education was acquired in the district schools. Came to Iowa with his parents in the year 1849. At the age of twenty-three enlisted in Company A, Fifty-ninth Illinois Veteran Infantry, at Knoxville, Illinois, June 17, 1861, promoted to captain of said company; served on the staff of Major-General T. Wood; participated in twenty-seven battles; wounded twice at the battle of Lookout Mountain; mustered out of service December 25, 1865, at San Antonio, Texas. Returned to Van Buren county and engaged in the grain, livestock and lumber business. Elected to the House of Representatives of the Nineteenth General Assembly, serving one term. Elected Sheriff of Van Buren county in November, 1889, serving two terms as such officer. Purchased a farm and has since been engaged in farming. Elected to State Senate November, 1903; served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. A Republican in politics.
