Senator from Thirty-first district, composed of Boone and Story counties, was born at Reynolds' Basin, Niagara county, New York, August 8, 1850, of Irish parents. He came to Serena township, La Salle county, Illinois, with his parents in the early fifties, where his mother died August 25, 1855. With his father's family he moved to Livingston county, Illinois, in March, 1865, where his father died November 25, 1865. He received his education in the common schools of Illinois. Came to Blairstown, Iowa, in July, 1870, and worked as a harvest hand and in an elevator, returning to Illinois in December of the same year. Came again to Blairstown and worked for about six months in a grain elevator in 1871, and returned the same year to Illinois, and in January, 1872, in company with a brother, he ran a cornsheller in and around Blairstown, Iowa, returning again to Illinois in July, 1872. He sold his interests in Illinois in the autumn of 1874 and bought three hundred and seventy acres of land in Boone county, Iowa, for himself, his sister and brother, both of whose interests he has since bought out and forms part of the twenty-three hundred and sixty acres he now holds in his own name near Beaver, Iowa. For six years he was loss adjuster for the Farmers' Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Company of Boone county, Iowa. He has been elected justice of the peace, school director, school treasurer and township trustee at different times. Was representative from Boone county in the Thirtieth, Thirty-first, Thirty-second and Thirty-second extra general assemblies. Elected senator in 1912. A republican in politics.
