Senator from the Twelfth District, composed of Poweshiek and Keokuk counties, was born in Glover, Orleans county, Vermont, February 22, 1842, of Scotch-American parentage. Moved to Bureau county, Illinois, in 1854, where he resided on a farm until 1865. Education acquired in country district school and high school at Kewanee, Illinois. Entered Rush Medical College, Chicago, in 1866, graduating from that institution in February, 1871. Settled in Grinnell, Iowa, May, 1871, where he has continued in active practice to the present time. Married Martha C. Brainard in 1874. One child living, E. W. Clark, Jr., who is engaged in the lumber business in Grinnell. Five times elected to city council of Grinnell, of which body he is now a member. President of the school board six years, trustee of Iowa College since 1898, trustee of the Stewart Free Public Library, mayor of Grinnell from 1893 to 1897, during which time a complete system of waterworks and sewers was installed. President of Iowa State Medical Society, 1907. Always a Republican, casting his first vote for Abraham Lincoln, and has voted for every Republican candidate for President since. Representative from Poweshiek County in the Thirty-first General Assembly. Elected Senator in 1906.

Born in Glover, Orleans County, Vermont, February 11, 1842, of Scotch American parentage. He moved when 12 years old to Bureau county, Illinois, where be resided on a farm until 1865. His education was acquired in the country district school and the high school at Kewanee, Illinois. In 1866 he entered Rush Medical College, Chicago, graduating in February, 1871. In May of that year, he came to Grinnell, where he grew up with the city. He was married in 1874, to Miss Julia Brainard. Dr. Clark was elected a member of the city council of Grinnell and president of the school board. He has been a trustee of Grinnell College. Served as a trustee of Stewart public library, and was mayor of Grinnell from 1893 to 1897. He was president of the State Medical Society in 1907. He was a lifelong republican, casting his first ballot for Abraham Lincoln. His party honored him calling him to serve first as representative from Poweshiek county in the Thirty-first General Assembly and then electing him in 1906 to the state senate from the Twelfth district, composed of Poweshiek and Keokuk counties. His service in the legislature was marked by great devotion to duty. He is a member of the Congregational Church.
