Senator from the Twenty-third district composed of Jackson county, was born in Sabula, Iowa, March 14, 1874, the ancestors on one side being from the sturdy German people who settled in New York and on the other from the old New Englanders, his grandfather having been a native of Connecticut. After finishing the high school course in his home town, he attended Grinnell College, graduating from there in 1894, with the degree of Ph.B. He then worked two years in the bank at Sabula, Iowa, and in the fall of 1896 entered the University of Iowa, where he took the regular law course, receiving the degrees of LL.B. and A.M. in the year 1898. Is president of the bank at Sabula and is engaged in the practice of law. For the last six years has held the office of city treasurer. He also holds the offices of city attorney and school treasurer. Is a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Masonic order, in which he has attained the degrees of the Consistory and the Shrine. Married to Miss Winnifred McElin of Savanna, Illinois, in 1909. Elected representative in 1899 and re-elected in 1901. Elected senator in 1912, being the first republican elected to the senate from Jackson county for forty-eight years, his father, who was a member of the tenth and eleventh general assemblies, being the last who was not a democrat.
