Senator from the thirty-seventh district, composed of the counties of Hamilton, Hardin and Wright, was born in Webster City, Iowa, June 18, 1859, of American born parents. He attended the public schools of Webster City and later the university of Iowa from which he graduated. For a time after leaving the university he engaged in newspaper work but in 1880 he began the study of law in his father's office and was admitted to practice in 1881. He was elected city attorney of Webster City in 1890 and in 1891 served as special United States attorney in the celebrated river land cases. He was a member of the house of representatives from Hamilton county in the twenty-third and twenty-fourth general assemblies. In 1892 he was a delegate at large from Iowa to the republican national convention and in 1896 he was elected presidential elector from the tenth congressional district on the republican ticket. Elected senator in 1910, 1914 and 1922. A republican in politics. He died March 2, 1923.
