Attended Central College at Pella, Iowa. Married to Meta Raney of Marengo, Iowa, in 1913. Has three daughters; Francesca, Rachel, and Jane. Has been a general contractor for the last 27 years. Member of the Congregational church, Masonic lodge and the Elks club. Served two years as president of the Master Builders of Iowa. Served two terms on the Creston school board. Served eight years as mayor of Creston. Delegate from the Fifth district to the national Republican convention in Cleveland in 1936. Elected to the senate in 1940.
