Member American Legion, Masonic lodge and Methodist church. Married Una Hines of Hamburg, October 22, 1919. Father of three sons, David Sterling 19, Carl Dudley 16, and Richard Paul 13. With brother, L. R. Sjulin, started the Interstate Nurseries, Hamburg, Iowa, in 1920. Elected Senator 1938 and re-elected 1942.

Started to work in the nurseries in Shenandoah at the age of 9, for 30 cents a day. Father died when he was 11. Graduated from Shenandoah high school. 1908; from liberal arts college, State University of Iowa, in 1913. Was in the World war. Member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Methodist Episcopal church. Married October 22, 1919; father of three sons: David Sterling, 17, Carl Dudley, 14, and Richard Paul, 11. With brother, L. R. Sjulin, started the Inter-State Nurseries, Hamburg, Iowa, in 1920. From a small beginning, this firm has become one of the largest nurseries in the United States. Admitted younger brother, David Sjulin, to partnership in 1925. Has been a member of the Hamburg city council. Serving last half of first term in Senate.
