Bedford Republican 6th Senatorial District Adams and Taylor Counties. O. J. Kirketeg was elected to the State Senate in 1936. Was re-elected in 1944. Served in the 51st session from the date of convening on January 8, 1945, until his death on March 22, 1945. He had been named by the Governor as a member of the State Tax Commission to commence duty thereon July 1st, 1945. He suffered a heart attack at his rooms and his death occurred a short time later in a Des Moines hospital.

Bedford Republican 6th Senatorial District Adams and Taylor Counties. Born in Humboldt county, May 2, 1891, son of Mr. and Mrs. K. K. Kirketeg. He spent his first seventeen years on a farm; moved with his parents to Cedar Falls in 1908. Graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1912. Taught rural school and as school principal at Little Cedar; was superintendent of schools at Columbus City, Iowa, in 1913-14. Graduated from the college of law University of Iowa in 1917. In the U.S. Army 1917 until 1919; and has since been twice commissioned in the infantry reserve. Began practicing law at Bedford, in 1919, with partnership of Wisdom and Kirketeg. Taylor county attorney in 1929 and 1930. A member of the American Legion, first commander of the old 8th district. Active in Masonic and Eastern Star orders. Served as grand high priest, Royal Arch Masons of Iowa in 1931-32; is associate grand patron, Order of Eastern Star of Iowa. Member of the Presbyterian church. Married to Kathlyn M. MacCulloch of Nashua, Iowa, February 7, 1937. Elected to the senate in 1936.

Senator from the sixth district, composed of Adams and Taylor counties, was born near Eagle Grove (but in Humboldt county) Iowa, on May 2, 1891. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. K. K. Kirketeg. He spent his first seventeen years on a farm, moving with his parents to Cedar Falls in 1908, where he attended the Iowa State Teachers college from which he graduated in 1912. Taught in a township school near Alta, Iowa, during the winter of 1912-13, and finished that school year as principal of the schools at Little Cedar, Iowa. Was superintendent of schools at Columbus City, Iowa in 1913-14. Thereafter entered the University of Iowa and graduated from the college of law in 1917. Soon thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until in 1919 and has since been twice commissioned in the infantry reserve. Began practicing law at Bedford, in April, 1919, with Frank Wisdom, forming a partnership of Wisdom and Kirketeg, March 1, 1920. Served as county attorney of Taylor county, in 1929 and 1930. Has been an active member of the American Legion serving as first district commander of the old eighth congressional district. Has also been active in Masonic and Eastern Star orders. Served as grand high priest of the grand chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Iowa in 1931-32; at the present time is associate grand patron of the grand chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Iowa. Is a member of Presbyterian church. Was married to Kathlyn M. MacCulloch of Nashua, Iowa, on February 7, 1937. Elected to the senate in 1936. A republican.
