House Resolution 21 - Introduced
An Act 1recognizing and congratulating the
2Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team
3and program on its outstanding regional and national
4athletic achievements.
5WHEREAS, the Southwestern Community College men’s
6basketball team (the Spartans) broke a school record
7for wins in a season with a 36-1 record for the
82016-2017 basketball season;and
9WHEREAS, the Spartans held the number one ranking
10in the National Junior College Athlete Association
11(NJCAA) National Polls for six weeks, including the
12final regular season poll;and
13WHEREAS, the Spartans won the regular season and
14postseason NJCAA Division II Region XI Champion title,
15qualifying for their first national tournament trip
16since 1999;and
17WHEREAS, the Spartans secured their first national
18championship with a 77-53 win over Louisburg College on
19March 25, 2017, in Danville, Illinois;and
20WHEREAS, that victory gave the Spartans the title
21of 2017 NJCAA Division II National Men’s Basketball
22Champions;and
23WHEREAS, freshman Broderic Thomas, sophomore KeShawn
24Wilson, and sophomore Jordan Johnson were voted onto
25the NJCAA Division II All Region First Team;and
26WHEREAS, nine players on the Spartan team were named
27to NJCAA Division II Academic All Region Teams;and
28WHEREAS, Head Coach Todd Lorensen was named NJCAA
-1-1Division II National Coach of the Year;NOW THEREFORE,
2BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
3That the House of Representatives recognizes and
4congratulates the Southwestern Community College men’s
5basketball team and program on its outstanding regional
6and national athletic achievements;and
7BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
8Resolution be sent to Southwestern Community College
9Men’s Basketball Team Head Coach Todd Lorensen and
10Southwestern Community College President Barbara
11Crittenden.
