Senate Resolution 12 - Introduced

An Act 1relating to the proposal by the federal
2Office of Management and Budget to eliminate the
3AmeriCorps program.
4WHEREAS, Congress passed the National and Community
5Service Trust Act of 1993 to create the Corporation
6for National and Community Service, and three National
7and Community Service-administered programs, including
8AmeriCorps, to encourage Americans to give back to
9their communities through national service;and
10WHEREAS, AmeriCorps volunteers provide intensive,
11results-driven service to meet educational,
12environmental, health, economic, and other pressing
13needs across Iowa;and
14WHEREAS, AmeriCorps volunteers assist in providing
15tutoring and mentoring services to children, support
16veterans and military families, increase economic
17opportunity, and recruit and manage volunteers;and
18WHEREAS, since 1994, more than 10,000 Iowa residents
19have served more than 14 million hours and have
20qualified for Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards
21totaling more than $34,570,000;and
22WHEREAS, AmeriCorps grant funding is received
23by Volunteer Iowa, which in turn awards grants to
24nonprofit groups to respond to local needs;and
25WHEREAS, there are currently 1,234 Iowa members of
26AmeriCorps serving 45 local programs and projects;and
27WHEREAS, the proposal by the federal Office of
28Management and Budget to eliminate AmeriCorps would
-1-1drastically and negatively impact Iowa citizens;NOW
2THEREFORE,
      3BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
4opposes the proposal by the federal Office of
5Management and Budget to eliminate the AmeriCorps
6program; and
   7BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
8Resolution be sent to President of the United States
9Donald J. Trump, Vice President and President of the
10United States Senate Michael Pence, Majority Leader
11of the United States Senate Mitchell McConnell, Jr.,
12Speaker of the United States House of Representatives
13Paul Ryan, Jr., Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad, and
14each member of Iowa’s congressional delegation.
