4BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 147.85A Inquiry about firearm
2ownership or possession prohibited.
3A person licensed to practice a profession under this
4chapter shall not inquire about or otherwise request
5information about a patient’s or client’s ownership or
6possession of firearms.
7EXPLANATION
8The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
9the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
10This bill prohibits a person licensed under Code chapter 147
11(health-related professions) from inquiring about or otherwise
12requesting information about a patient’s or client’s ownership
13or possession of firearms. A person violating the bill is
14guilty of a serious misdemeanor. A serious misdemeanor is
15punishable by confinement for no more than one year and a fine
16of at least $315 but not more than $1,875.
17A person licensed under Code chapter 147 includes a
18physician and surgeon, podiatric physician, osteopathic
19physician and surgeon, physician assistant, psychologist,
20chiropractor, nurse, dentist, dental hygienist, dental
21assistant, optometrist, speech pathologist, audiologist,
22pharmacist, physical therapist, physical therapist assistant,
23occupational therapist, occupational therapy assistant,
24orthotist, prosthetist, pedorthist, respiratory care
25practitioner, practitioner of cosmetology arts and sciences,
26practitioner of barbering, funeral director, dietitian, marital
27and family therapist, mental health counselor, respiratory
28care and polysomnography practitioner, polysomnographic
29technologist, social worker, massage therapist, athletic
30trainer, acupuncturist, nursing home administrator, hearing aid
31specialist, or sign language interpreter or transliterator.
