House Resolution 6 - Introduced
An Act 1recognizing February 17, 2017, as the
2175th anniversary of Iowa Wesleyan University.
3WHEREAS, in the 1840s, the frontier community
4of Mount Pleasant was zealous for culture and
5concerned for the educated person, and the Territorial
6Legislature, being aware of the need for schools, on
7February 17, 1842, granted a charter for the Mount
8Pleasant Literary Institute in Henry County;and
9WHEREAS, one year later, on or before March 8, 1843,
10twenty-six men from Mount Pleasant signed Articles
11of Association for the purpose of erecting the Mount
12Pleasant Collegiate Institute, under the charge of the
13Methodist Episcopal Church;and
14WHEREAS, Iowa Wesleyan University proudly continues
15its affiliation with the United Methodist Church and is
16recognized as Iowa’s first independent, faith-based,
17coeducational institution of higher learning and one
18of the oldest of its type west of the Mississippi
19River;and
20WHEREAS, today, Iowa Wesleyan University has grown
21into a top-tier university in the Midwest region of
22the United States and serves students of all ages
23and cultures and provides numerous educational,
24cultural, and athletic opportunities for personal and
25professional growth;and
26WHEREAS, Mount Pleasant, along with the state
27of Iowa, is home to its university of 175 years and
28proudly celebrates the incredible and lasting legacy of
-1-1one of the nation’s most historic universities;and
2WHEREAS, Iowa Wesleyan University is an innovator
3among private colleges in embracing the expansion of
4quality, flexible graduate and professional programs
5as a way to meet our economy’s need for an ever more
6sophisticated and well-prepared workforce in the region
7of southeast Iowa and beyond;NOW THEREFORE,
8BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
9That the House of Representatives recognizes February
1017, 2017, as the 175th anniversary of Iowa Wesleyan
11University.
