3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 809.5, subsection 1, paragraph f,
2subparagraph (3), Code 2015, is amended to read as follows:
   3(3)  Notwithstanding subparagraph subparagraphs (1) and
4 (2), firearms or ammunition with an aggregate fair market
5value equal to or less than five hundred dollars
shall be
6deposited with the department of public safety. The firearms
7or ammunition may be held by the department of public safety
8and be used for law enforcement, testing, or comparisons by the
9criminalistics laboratory, or may be destroyed or disposed of
10by the department of public safety in accordance with section
11809.21.
12EXPLANATION
13The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
14the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   15The bill requires that all firearms and ammunition seized by
16law enforcement pursuant to Code chapter 809 (disposition of
17seized property) and deemed abandoned or for which the owner
18is unable to be located shall be deposited with the department
19of public safety regardless of the fair market value of the
20firearms or ammunition.
