2as the official state horse of the State of Iowa.
3WHEREAS, the American cream draft horse is the only draft
4horse breed native to the United States;and
5WHEREAS, the American cream draft horse is a breed that
6traces its bloodline back to a mare named “Old Granny”, which
7is believed to have been foaled in Iowa around the turn of the
8last century, first appearing in records from a farm sale in
9the city of Jewell, in Story county, Iowa, in 1911;and
10WHEREAS, the breed was recognized by the Iowa department
11of agriculture in 1950, based on a 1948 recommendation by the
12national stallion enrollment board;and
13WHEREAS, in 1944, the American cream horse association of
14America was chartered by Mr.C.T.Rierson, and his assistant
15Mrs.Karene (Bunker) Topp, of Radcliffe, Iowa, the culmination
16of almost 40 years of interest in creating a new breed of
17American draft horse;and
18WHEREAS, in 1993, members of the organization voted to amend
19the organization’s articles of incorporation to change its name
20to the American cream draft horse association;and
21WHEREAS, the American cream draft horse is immediately
22identifiable by its cream coat, pink skin, and amber-colored
23eyes, specific traits of the famous champagne dilution
24gene;and
25WHEREAS, in 1990, genetic testing found that, compared
26with other draft breeds and based upon gene marker data, the
27American cream draft horse formed a distinct group within the
28draft horses;and
29WHEREAS, the breed is closely associated with Iowa’s
30farming heritage — having a wide chest; sloping shoulders;
31a short, strong back; well-muscled hindquarters with strong,
32well-proportioned legs set well apart; strong hooves; and a
33gentle disposition;NOW THEREFORE,
34BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  STATE HORSE DESIGNATED.  The American cream draft
2horse is designated and shall be officially known as the state
3horse of Iowa.
4   Sec. 2.  APPROPRIATE REPRESENTATIONS.  The state records
5commission shall cooperate with the American cream draft
6horse association to obtain appropriate pictures and other
7representations of the American cream draft horse and shall
8display the pictures and representations in an appropriate
9place in the state historical museum.
10   Sec. 3.  OFFICIAL REGISTER.  The editor of the Iowa official
11register shall cooperate with the American cream draft horse
12association to include an appropriate picture and commentary of
13the American cream draft horse in the Iowa official register
14along with the pictures of the state rock, state flower, state
15bird, and state tree.
16EXPLANATION
17The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
18the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   19This joint resolution designates the American cream draft
20horse as the official state horse of Iowa. The state records
21commission is required to obtain pictures and other appropriate
22representations of the American cream draft horse and display
23the pictures and information in the state historical museum.
24The editor of the Iowa official register is required to include
25in the Iowa official register a picture of the American cream
26draft horse along with pictures of the state rock, state
27flower, state bird, and state tree.
