4BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. Section 466.6, Code 2021, is amended to read as
2follows:
3466.6 Water quality monitoring.
41. The department of natural resources shall operate water
5quality monitoring stations for the purpose of gathering
6information and data to establish benchmarks for water quality
7in this state.
82. The department of natural resources shall monitor
9microcystins and cylindrospermopsin in bodies of water used
10for recreational purposes. The department shall regularly
11publish the results of its monitoring on its internet site.
12The published results shall indicate whether concentrations
13of microcystins or cylindrospermopsin exceed concentrations
14recommended by the United States environmental protection
15agency.
16EXPLANATION
17The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
18the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
19This bill requires the department of natural resources to
20monitor microcystins and cylindrospermopsin in bodies of water
21used for recreational purposes. The department must publish
22the results on its internet site. The results must indicate
23whether the concentrations exceed those recommended by the
24United States environmental protection agency.
