3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  55.4A  Adverse employment actions
2prohibited.
   3An employer employing persons in this state shall not take
4any adverse action against an employee who is a resident of
5Iowa for seeking election to any public office or prohibit an
6employee who is a resident of Iowa from seeking election to a
7public office.
8EXPLANATION
9The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
10the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   11This bill prohibits an employer employing persons in Iowa
12from taking an adverse action against an employee who is
13an Iowa resident for running for a public office and from
14prohibiting an employee who is an Iowa resident from running
15for a public office.
   16By operation of law, a person who willfully violates a
17provision of this bill is guilty of a serious misdemeanor. A
18serious misdemeanor is punishable by confinement for no more
19than one year and a fine of at least $315 but not more than
20$1,875.
