3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 139A.41, Code 2020, is amended to read
2as follows:
   3139A.41  Chlamydia and gonorrhea Sexually transmitted
4infection
treatment.
   5Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary,
6a physician, physician assistant, or advanced registered nurse
7practitioner who diagnoses a sexually transmitted chlamydia,
8 or gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis infection in an individual
9patient may prescribe, dispense, furnish, or otherwise provide
10prescription oral antibiotic drugs to that patient’s sexual
11partner or partners without examination of that patient’s
12partner or partners. If the infected individual patient is
13unwilling or unable to deliver such prescription drugs to a
14sexual partner or partners, a physician, physician assistant,
15or advanced registered nurse practitioner may dispense,
16furnish, or otherwise provide the prescription drugs to the
17department or local disease prevention investigation staff for
18delivery to the partner or partners.
19EXPLANATION
20The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
21the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   22This bill expands the existing clinical practice of treating
23the sexual partners of patients diagnosed with chlamydia or
24gonorrhea to include trichomoniasis. Under the program, if a
25patient is diagnosed with one of these sexually transmitted
26infections, the patient’s physician, physician assistant,
27or advanced registered nurse practitioner may prescribe,
28dispense, furnish, or otherwise provide prescription oral
29antibiotic drugs to that patient’s sexual partner or partners
30without examination of that patient’s partner or partners.
31Additionally, if the infected patient is unwilling or unable
32to deliver such prescription drugs to a sexual partner or
33partners, a physician, physician assistant, or advanced
34registered nurse practitioner may dispense, furnish, or
35otherwise provide the prescription drugs to the department of
