4BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 724.4D Limitation on employers —
2firearms and ammunition.
31. For purposes of this section, “employee” includes a
4contract employee or volunteer.
52. A public or private employer shall not prohibit an
6employee in possession of a permit issued pursuant to section
7724.6 or 724.7 from carrying, transporting, or possessing
8a firearm or ammunition, if the firearm and ammunition are
9out of sight and inside the locked motor vehicle of the
10employee on the real property comprising the employee’s place
11of employment, provided the motor vehicle is parked in a
12location designated or allowed for employee parking, and if
13the carrying, transportation, or possession of the firearm or
14ammunition is otherwise lawful under the laws of this state.
15EXPLANATION
16The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
17the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
18This bill provides that an employer shall not prohibit an
19employee, which includes contract employees and volunteers,
20who possess a professional or nonprofessional permit to carry
21weapons from carrying, transporting, or possessing a firearm or
22ammunition on the real property comprising the employee’s place
23of employment if the firearm and ammunition are out of sight
24and inside the locked motor vehicle of the employee, provided
25the vehicle is parked in a location designated or allowed for
26employee parking, and if the carrying, transportation, or
27possession of the firearm or ammunition is otherwise lawful
28under Iowa law.
