Born July 13, 1821, in Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee. He married Emily H. Stephenson, May 19, 1845, in Tennessee. Mr. Mitchell was commissioned an officer in Company C, Iowa 7th Cavalry Regiment on April 28, 1863, and mustered out on August 19, 1864. He was a farmer by trade. He represented Wapello County in the Eighth Iowa General Assembly from 1860 to 1862.
