Born in Alsace, now a province of Germany, on the 4th of October, 1817. He came to Dubuque in 1840 and soon afterwards engaged in the bakery business, in which he continued for several years, when he purchased a farm on the southwestern outskirts of the city, near Wilde Street. He was very successful and while engaged in farming he also engaged in mining, and was also successful in this pursuit. He was an excellent businessman and became wealthy. He invested a great deal in property, which became very valuable as the city grew in population. Eva Maria Berg married Francis Mangold in Butler County, Pennsylvania on 14 Nov 1840.
