Matthew Clark was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, Aug. 15th, 1821. About 18 years ago he removed to Jefferson Co., Iowa, where he was engaged in farming and has lived ever since. Two years ago he was chosen to represent his district in the Legislature of the state. His earthly memorial is deeply engraved in the heart of the afflicted community in which he made his home, as it is also in the hearts of the brave men whom it was his privilege to command on the field of battle. He volunteered, and was chosen First Lieutenant of Co. H, 30th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers. He was soon promoted to the rank of Captain, where he acquitted himself with honor. Clark died of wounds received at the battle of Tuscumbia, where he was at the head of his company. He leaves a wife and five children.
