A lawyer in Mt. Pleasant. Served in the House in the 10th Iowa General Assembly. He was a candidate for Speaker of the House but eventually gave way to Jacob Butler of Muscatine, who appointed him Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. In that position he displayed fine legal acumen and ability. He was one of the ablest and influential members of that legislative body, and left a decided impression upon the laws that were framed during that session. He was a soldier in the Civil War and was Colonel of the Forty-fifth Iowa Infantry.
