Received B.A. in communications and public relations with a minor in journalism from the University of Northern Iowa and M.A. in integrated communications from Drake University. Served as a consistency coordinator for the '92 Clinton-Gore campaign. Served as communications chair for the Polk County Democrats. Has lobbied for the American Heart Association and volunteered in campaigns for local, state, and national races. Member of the DLC. Board member of United Way of Central Iowa, Des Moines Arts Festival, Polk County Health Services, and Women in Public Policy. Husband Brian Pattinson. Serving first term in House.
