Charles J. L. Foster

Charles J. L. Foster was born in Royalton, Niagara County, New York, in 1832. He married Julia A. Hill on October 6, 1852, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They had five children. His father was a prominent and wealthy man in Michigan, and Charles was given the benefit of a collegiate education, as well as law training. In 1856 he became a member of the bar of Tama County. After three years he removed to Poweshiek County and represented Poweshiek and Iowa counties in the House of Representatives from 1858 to 1860. In the 1860 census the family lived in English Township in Iowa County. By 1862 the family had relocated back to Kalamazoo and in 1870 Julia is running a boarding house.
