Rolf Vaughn Craft

Rolf Vaughn Craft was born November 1, 1937, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Margaret and Vaughn Craft. He passed away on January 9, 2009 at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Sondra; a son Erik and his wife Julie; a son Andrew, a daughter Heidi and her husband James, son Brent and his wife Karen and daughter Emily. Grandchildren, Elizabeth, Melanie, Philip, Bailey, Mathew, Chris, Britany, Michael, Mylik and Trent; and one sister, Marianne Craft Norton.

Craft graduated from Hudson High School and earned a Ph.D. in agricultural economics at Iowa State University. He served in the Army Reserves.

Craft taught economics at Luther College, was the dean of business at The Seibens School of Business, was director of the Ronald Reagan leadership Program at Eureka College, and held the James Leach Chair in finance and economics at Wartburg College.

Craft was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1977 serving the Northeast District including Winneshiek County. He also served as chair of the Ways and Means committee. He served as Iowa Republican chairperson and was a member of the Republican National Committee.

Craft was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, Iowa Farm Bureau, Rotary, Winneshiek County Pork Producers, Winneshiek County Cattleman’s Association, American Economic Association and American Agricultural Economic Association.

He actively participated in three research studies at Mayo Clinic in the last couple of years in the fight against melanoma.

Craft was a Winneshiek County Republican. He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1977. He served the 67th, 67th X, 68th, 69th, 69th X, and 69th XX General Assemblies.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE EIGHTY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF IOWA: That in the passing of the Honorable Rolf Vaughn Craft, the State has lost an honored citizen and faithful and useful public servant, and that the Senate by this resolution expresses its appreciation of his service to the State and tenders its sympathy and kindest regards to the members of his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the Senate and that the Secretary of the Senate be instructed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
