B.A., University of Iowa 1972. Married Nancy Kohrt, Rock Rapids, 1971. Active in local, state, and national politics since 1964, service on State Executive Board of Iowa Young Democrats 1966-69, Chairman Iowa Young Democrats for Robert Kennedy 1968, William Gannon for Governor staff 1970. Broadcast journalist 1967-69, 1970-71. Protestant. Member University of Iowa Alumni Association, Common Cause, Iowa Women's Political Caucus, Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Fund, Civil Liberties Union, Friends of Educational Television, Iowa State Historical Society, North Liberty Optimist Club, Johnson County "I" Club.
