Attended undergraduate college, Iowa State University and Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.). B.S. in Chem. Engineering, Northwestern University 1965. Active duty as Naval Reserve Officer in U.S. Navy, 1965-1968. J.D. College of Law, University of Iowa 1971. Law clerk, Iowa Supreme Court 1971-72. Assistant city attorney, city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1972-1975. Married Judith Whetstine of Wilton, Iowa, 1971. First term.
