Attended Dow City Consolidated High School, graduated 1953, Graceland Junior College at Lamoni, Omaha University, 1956-58. Married Claudine Turner, Feb. 14, 1958, in Council Bluffs. Children are Jim, Jr., Chris, and Jon. Member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; Elks; Elks Country Club; Moose; Kiwanis; local, state and national Independent Insurance Agents Ass'n. Insurance representative for Allstate Insurance Company of Council Bluffs 5 years. Started own insurance agency in 1965. Three years in Nebraska National Guard and in Air Force Reserve. President Council Bluffs Jaycees 1963. Nominated as one of Council Bluffs' Outstanding Young Men. Served as National Director United States Jaycees 1964. Justice of the Peace Lewis Township, 1965 to 1967. Serving second term in Senate.
